Great Baikal Ice

After breakfast, we embark on an unforgettable journey across the frozen expanse of Lake Baikal — aboard a Khivus hovercraft. Our route takes us from Listvyanka to Peschanaya Bay, then on to Buguldeika, and finally to the legendary Olkhon Island.

Our first stop is a stretch of ice so clear and smooth it mirrors the sky — a natural skating rink where you can glide over the world's deepest lake.

At Peschanaya Bay, we are greeted by breathtaking coastal views and the famous "stilted trees," whose exposed roots cling dramatically to the sandy slopes. In Buguldeika, we witness one of Baikal's most magical phenomena — methane bubbles frozen beneath the ice, like thousands of tiny glass pearls suspended in time.

A warm lunch awaits us before we continue our voyage.

By late afternoon, we arrive at Olkhon — the largest and only permanently inhabited island on Lake Baikal. We settle into our hotel in the village of Khuzhir, the island's main hub.

As evening falls, we gather to witness the sunset over Baikal's most sacred landmark — Shamanka Rock, also known as Cape Burkhan. With the sky ablaze in golden and crimson hues, it's a moment of pure Siberian magic.

This morning after breakfast, we set off south across Olkhon Island in a rugged UAZ vehicle, exploring the island's landward side with dramatic descents down to the frozen lake. Our goal: the most breathtaking ice formations Baikal has to offer - shimmering grottoes, frozen splashes, towering hummocks, and ice so pure it glows like blue glass.

Our first stop is the picturesque Kharantsy Island, a rocky islet that comes alive with nesting seagulls in the warmer months. From there, we ascend to an observation deck near Khuzhir village, where a bird's-eye view reveals the sprawling majesty of Olkhon from above.

We continue to Capes Yalga and Shebety, where nature has carved magnificent ice grottoes and sculpted fantastical sokuyas - icy formations that cling to the cliffs like frozen waterfalls. Along the way, we pause at Trident Rock, where I'll share an ancient legend that echoes through the island's windswept landscapes.

A hearty lunch awaits us, featuring a rich fish soup brewed from freshly caught Baikal fish - the perfect warmth after a morning in the cold.

In the afternoon, we lace up our skates and glide across the mirror-like surface of Hula Bay or the Olkhon Gate Strait, an experience that feels like dancing on a frozen ocean.

As evening descends, we watch the sun paint the sky in fiery shades over the vast white expanse - an incredible sunset to close another unforgettable day on the sacred island.

On the last morning of our journey, after breakfast, we set out for one of the trip's most extraordinary experiences: a hovercraft cruise through the capes and islands of the Maloye More - the Small Sea. This stretch of Baikal reveals ice in all its glorious forms, from shimmering caves to delicate stalagmites, and along the way, you'll learn the many poetic names that locals have given to Baikal ice, each reflecting its unique character and texture.

Our route takes us to the tiny island of Ogoy, crowned by a snow-white Buddhist stupa dedicated to Enlightenment. Here, at the island's southern tip - known as the "Dragon's Tail" - we'll capture some of the most stunning photographs of the entire trip.

We then glide past Capes Khorgoy and Kobylya Golova, where nature paints some of the most exquisite ice splashes on the entire lake, frozen mid-motion like crystal sculptures against the cliffs.

As our Khivus journey draws to a close, we cross the Olkhon Gate Strait, where the wind has polished the ice to a mirror-like sheen – a dazzling final vision of Baikal's frozen artistry.

A hearty lunch awaits us along the way, replenishing our energy for the road ahead.

By evening, we arrive back in the city of Irkutsk, where our unforgettable adventure comes full circle.
